Suggestions for Carry Blade

Not firearms...but closest sub-Category choice.
.
Not talking about a general-purpose or scabbard knife but rather a daily carry "defensive/battle" (for lack of a better term) blade.

Thoughts on types of steel/edge, carry, use, speed of access, technique, availability, etc...

Nice - but it may get you busted. Check your local laws.

You may have a better chance with a folding pocket knife. LEO more inclined to see it as a tool.

Benchmade
Spyderco

TA and others have suggested that you don't want to bring a knife to a gun fight.
I agree.

Has a tube down the blade as I recall. That would limit it to only one application.

I'm partial to the spyderco Delica. It is what I carry.

It can be had for about $40 FRN's. It's a good quality knife that won't break the bank and it is easy to snap open using the little thumb circle.

I don't think I'd actually shell out for a WASP, but why would anyone need more than one blast? If you blow a dude's guts all over the sidewalk and are still there holding a dagger, you're probably good to go.

You'd definitely get people's attention exploding a single abdomen.

I would recommend a Cold Steel Ti-lite with the 4" blade. Has a nice hook that grabs the edge of you're pocket when you draw it out. Low profile, very tough.

Chuck, what I meant was it's strictly a "combat" piece as opposed to something you might want to , oh, say...peel an apple with or cut a rope.

Yeah, I see your point though (pardon the pun)

I've even heard of or seen knives that shoot the blade out the end. Legal? I doubt it...Available? Probably

Re: Suggestions for Carry Blade

Here's a few excellent choices

Kershaw JYD (junk yard dog) 2 plain edge.... excellent , stout but a tad heavy one helluva knife though 5.7 ounces , 3 3/4" blade , walker liner lock.

Benchmade griptillian probably the best locking system there is (axial lock)
the full sized griptillian is just under 4 oz making it an excellent EDC, blade is right at 3 1/2"

Spderco caly 3 and the knife noelephant is showing, caly costs more but is g10 scales a steel liner, I really G10 handles with fine scales, mid frame lock, excellent grip. blade is 3" and weighs well under 3 oz and the wire pocket clip works better than any other I have....the knife noelephant shows should weigh even less as there is no liner......hard to bad mouth a spyderco. If your looking for protection go with the spyderco military, big folder.

And a big daddy folder for protection, even bigger than the spydee military is the benchmade skirmish.... it's a beast.

I didn't talk much about sharpness with any of these cuz they're all sharp.

Most consider an excellent EDC knife has to weigh 4oz or under....jus sayin, the caly 3 carry's very nicely.

Correction: the Delica does have a liner , it's a nested steel liner , not what I consider a full liner though.

What about something from the SOG stable? I have a seal cub elite. Very happy with it. Nice sturdy blade, grip is good, well spaced finger groves for most sized hands. It's big brother comes with an extended tang for breaking stuff, windows, nuts etc.

I think the shealth is ok as a duty type being that it is made from webbing. The use of velcro fasteners detracts from it's stealthability IMO. I was never really happy with that part of it although the design is good. It could easily be replaced with a more suitable leather or hard plastic sheath if needed.

I think I have the same one. Cut my palm open once slicing a lime. I've had all kinds, but I'd hold that one tightest to me in a knivefight.

Remember, always turn your palms up in a knive fight so you can protect the meaty part of your forearms. One cut is all it takes to end it. Same goes with a stick fight, if your hand gets hit, your hand is out of comission. These things do not last 5 mins like you see on the movies unless your Phillipino and "been there, done that". Oh, and never challenge a Phillipino to a knive or stick fight.

Re: Suggestions for Carry Blade

Task specific question.

Defense:(shitty substitute for CCW, and ideally combined with pepperspray/ASP)
Knife before Kali/Eskrima/military? Emerson Wave Kerambit I guess...
Knife after Kali/Eskrima/military? Something good quality that you're familiar with.
SHTF: Kukri/Kabar

Work:
Razor blade holding pocket folder
Rope/Wire:Serated Spyderco
Underwater:Research "Dive knives"
On Boat:Benchmade and Spyderco both cater to this market.
Rescue: Sheepsfoot blade profile(spyderco?)/BM Rescue Hook

No task in mind?
Leatherman
Spyderco Delica/Police

To go with nice outfit? I'm partial to the Spyderco Kiwi.

Benchmade balisongs are nice and fun, but they don't make very good carry pieces unless you enjoy repetitively "educating people" about how you're not a thug/wigger. There is something to be said for the difficulty of a balisong with channel handles to expose the blade edge in your pocket by accident.(they're also solid knives in 2 out of 3 dimensions, and easy to clean.) Not likely to stab you during a fall. Semi-likely to break a rib/bone.

Switchblades are stupid except as collectibles.(OTF's are an exception kind of)
Assisted openers(Kershaw Speedsafe)>switchblades. Legally and functionally.

Assisted openers and Emerson Wave are about a tie IMHO.

Most D/A OTF switchblades like the microtechs have mediocre blade wobble by design. Microtech is pretty good at fixing this, but it's comparable to RRA making direct impingement usable. Problem never goes away completely. Just some artists are amazing at hiding it.

If you get a karambit you should probably learn karambit specific defensive techniques. I've heard there's a nasty one involving the collar bone.

I never have learned how to use one. If you do martial arts you'll probably like it, because as I understand, alot of trapping and grappling translates pretty seemlessly to major artery surgery with the addition of a karambit. Having the option to educate a goblin with the ring instead of giving them an oil chainge is another perk.

Which blade steel is another important question. Can't go wrong with spyderco, but they deserve a talented knife sharpener, or a well practiced "sharpmaker" operator.

D2 is killer but hard to sharpen(can rust easier than SS so be careful)
420C is so-so, but easier to sharpen
VG-10 is supposed to be good, but I never could put an edge on a dagger I had in VG-10
Damascus is pretty/artistic and I understand it doesn't like fingerprint oil.

http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=387528

http://www.balisongcollector.com/profiles.html

Sheepfoot is good for avoiding stabbing.

Wharncliff is just cool if you ask me/easy to sharpen.

Weehawk/Spearpoint/Bowie are good for stabbing.

Kriss is GREAT for stabbing. The undulations roll off bone. It's shitty for everything else since it's a nightmare to sharpen. More cutting area per blade length if you want to saw at rope or something I guess.

Karmbit is good for self defense.

Kukri is good for hacking, as are other recurved blades(see: rope cutting contest winners)

Bolo's are similar to Kukris/Machetes/sometimes made from leaf springs off jeeps as I've heard=good blade steel.

+1 on the Spyderco Endura!!! My fav. I have a delica too, but prefer the Endura.

The WASP... You had better disapear if you use that. It would look bad in court. You would look like a nut. Like someone conceal and carrying a .50 Desert Eagle. Even if legal, even if in self defense, would still look bad in court.

Re: Suggestions for Carry Blade

In my opinion and I've carried one for nearly 20 years.....SPYDERCO......Get the latest version of the Endura....very nice size......next choice at 0.5" shorter blade and handle...thus 1.0" shorter LOA.....Delica

Newest version have a metal clip that can be mounted on either side, both ends...thus left or right pocket, tip up or down.

This is the best fighting knife in my opinion that can be carries easily ...light and flat....also I carry pocket pistol in right pocket....so i must have option for knife left pocket.

I can't say enough good for Spyderco...and the price is reasonable....you can find these on the net for $50 - $60.....and retail just under $100.

Even better, they claim you can fight a bear with one.

"Carrying a regular knife is useless against a bear or similar predator, but the WASP with its massive injection of compressed gas can have a devastating effect on mammals of any size."

Yeah... you don't wanna go hand to hand against a bear unless you have the right kind of knife.

OMG. I'd shell out for pay per view if anyone here wants to tackle a bear with a wasp knife.

You should always have a knife on you, all the time. There are a thousand tasks it can do. Not to mention if somebody grabs your gun-arm an off-hand knife is the fastest way to make them let go.

I buy cheap knives for work, I have a Kershaw which is very very nice, several buck knifes, some kabars both large size and tanto, and some kuhkris for working with plants and what not.

Edit: Oh yeah and my Keychain opens beer & boxes!

Kuhkris...That's another I was trying to remember. Had looked into it once before...carried by the Nepal soldiers (fierce fighters during WW II) if I remember correctly.

A lot of very interesting history and information on those.

Best are, as I recall, still made in Nepal.(just above India)
Interesting configuration/shape of blade . Have heard nothing but good things about these...somewhat versatile in size and utility, too.

Had a site for these bookmarked but lost it after a 'puter crash a while back.

Thanks for reminding me.

If you're going for the 3" blade size, go with the Caly 3 you get G10 handle and VG10 blade. You won't look back after that. Granted, it's almost twice the price of the Delica, but you get:

1.tip up left or right carry.
2. G10 scales
3. top and bottom jimping on the spine and choil
4. the handle shape is far superior to the Delica, ergonomic handle with a great choil.
5. full stainless steel liners, tightens up the frame makes blade rock solid.
6. better blade shape
7. full flat grind for superior cutting performance

Right now I have a POS Gerber knife that I carry daily. Great for opening boxes. I've found a need to get a better knife and went shopping the other day. Wasn't impressed with what I saw for the prices.

So, I contacted my friend who is a blacksmith. :15_1_70v:

He is making a knife very similar to this one for me. It will have more fine detail in the damascus on the blade, and the grip is going to be fossilized mastodon tooth instead of bone. :s1:

Since it is custom, I'm waiting for it to be forged, etc. Although it is somewhat of an impatient wait.

Mine looks same as one stuck in the stump....it's the 18" Ang Khola, pretty good for medium to heavy brush, kinda wish I'd have purchased the 15" though ....lighter and quicker.

Wow Nub, great selection over at that site you posted...Looks awesome.
http://www.himalayan-imports.com/him...tephensee).jpg

Just as in Dune (The Book), with a Kukhri you are supposed to draw blood everytime you draw the blade. Even if you have to cut your own hand to do it. However, when I get my Khukri's, I have a sit down with them, and I gently explain that we do things a little differently around here. We're still about strength and honor, but we won't be going crazy. I enlist them for tasks and they seem to enjoy it. Cutting plants and brush, or being used to crack crawfish, makes them happy enough and they release their old customs.

Their lust for blood having been assauged, I now feel comfortable having them on my team without worrying about the reprocussions.

Machete's are good for slashing, but personally I like the pure CHOPPING POWER of a Khukri! I have started using the fatter one pictured below instead of an axe...it's much much faster than a hand-hatchet...unless you have the room to carry a full-sized axe....let's just say this is more efficient than a hatchet but not as awesome as an axe. Much lighter and smaller.

By the way, Cold Steel makes a WICKED 21" Khukri for under 20$ Here are my 2 favorite Cold Steel Purchases:
http://i141.photobucket.com/albums/r...nife/img1F.gif
http://bekleidungskammer.de/images/C...a%20Sheath.jpghttp://www.survivalistsoutfitter.com...oboo/97KMS.jpg
The above were under 20$ Each! Gonna hold their value a lot more than a note with a picture of andrew jackson on it!! They take an edge decently and do not wear out quickly. You can use them for anything.

For Off-hand Carry I prefer a full-tang tanto or hunter's knife. For Extra points you can learn the samurai method of tying this horizontially into your belt so it can be drawn even if someone has you in a bear hug.
